What is GST Registration?
GST Registration is the process by which a business entity gets registered under the Goods and Services Tax regime. It is a unique 15-digit Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN) issued by the tax authorities. This registration is mandatory for certain businesses, enabling them to legally collect GST from their customers, claim Input Tax Credit (ITC), and comply with the tax laws.
The GST regime aims to simplify the indirect tax structure by subsuming multiple central and state taxes into a single tax, thereby reducing the cascading effect of taxes and creating a common national market.
Benefits of GST Registration
Advantages for Businesses and the Economy
- Legal Recognition: Registered businesses are legally recognized as suppliers of goods or services, allowing them to collect GST from their customers.
- Input Tax Credit (ITC): The most significant benefit is the ability to claim Input Tax Credit on the GST paid on purchases of goods and services used for business purposes. This reduces the overall tax burden.
- Competitive Advantage: Registered businesses can supply goods/services to other registered businesses, making them more competitive. They can also participate in government tenders.
- Simplified Compliance: While initial compliance might seem complex, GST aims to simplify the overall indirect tax structure by replacing multiple taxes with one.
- Enhanced Credibility: Being GST registered adds to the credibility and trustworthiness of a business, as it signifies adherence to tax laws.
- Expansion of Market: Businesses can sell goods/services across states without the complexities of various state-specific taxes.
Eligibility for GST Registration
Who Needs to Register for GST?
GST registration is mandatory for certain categories of businesses and voluntary for others:
Mandatory Registration:
- Turnover Limit:
- Businesses whose aggregate turnover in a financial year exceeds ₹40 Lakh (for goods suppliers) or ₹20 Lakh (for service providers).
- For Special Category States (e.g., North-Eastern states, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh), the turnover limit is ₹20 Lakh for goods and ₹10 Lakh for services.
- Inter-State Supply: Any person making inter-state taxable supply of goods. (For inter-state supply of services, the threshold limit applies).
- Casual Taxable Person: Persons who occasionally undertake supplies in a taxable territory where they have no fixed place of business.
- Non-Resident Taxable Person: Persons who occasionally undertake supplies in a taxable territory but have no fixed place of business in India.

- Agents: Agents of a supplier.
- Online Information and Database Access or Retrieval (OIDAR) Services: Persons supplying OIDAR services from outside India to a non-taxable online recipient.
