About Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)

The **Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)** was launched by the Government of India in August 2014 as a National Mission for Financial Inclusion. Its core objective is to ensure universal access to financial services in an affordable manner. These services include:

  • Banking/Savings & Deposit Accounts
  • Remittance (money transfer)
  • Credit (access to loans)
  • Insurance (accidental and life cover)
  • Pension facilities

The scheme aims to bring a comprehensive financial inclusion by providing at least one basic banking account for every household, financial literacy, and channeling government benefits directly into these accounts (Direct Benefit Transfer - DBT).

How to Open a PMJDY Account

Simple Steps to Financial Inclusion

Opening a PMJDY account is a straightforward process and can be done at any bank branch or Business Correspondent (Bank Mitra) outlet.

Steps to Open an Account:

  1. Visit a Bank Branch or Bank Mitra: Go to your nearest public or private sector bank branch, or a Business Correspondent (Bank Mitra) outlet.
  2. Fill the Application Form: Obtain and duly fill the PMJDY account opening form. These forms are available at bank branches and can also be downloaded from the official PMJDY website.
  3. Attach Required Documents: Submit the necessary documents for identity and address proof.
  4. Aadhaar Card: If you have an Aadhaar Card, no other document is generally required. If your address has changed, a self-certification of the current address is sufficient.
  5. Other Officially Valid Documents (OVDs): If Aadhaar is not available, you can provide any one of the following: Voter ID Card, Driving License, PAN Card, Passport, or NREGA Card. If these documents also contain your address, they can serve as both proof of identity and address.
  6. Low-Risk Category: If you do not have any of the above OVDs but are categorized as "low-risk" by the bank, you can open a small account by submitting an identity card with your photograph issued by Central/State Government Departments, Statutory/Regulatory Authorities, Public Sector Undertakings, Scheduled Commercial Banks, and Public Financial Institutions, or a letter issued by a gazetted officer with a duly attested photograph.
  7. Biometric Verification: For Aadhaar-based account opening, biometric verification may be required.
  8. Account Activation: Once the documents are verified, your PMJDY account will be opened.

It is advisable to link your Aadhaar number to your PMJDY account for seamless Direct Benefit Transfers and to avail of all scheme benefits.
