What is a Driving License?
A Driving License (DL) is an official document permitting an individual to operate one or more types of motorized vehicles on public roads. It is mandatory for all drivers in India.
Types of Driving Licenses
- Learner's License (LL): Provisional license for learning to drive.
- Permanent Driving License (DL): For private vehicles (Motorcycle without Gear, with Gear, Light Motor Vehicle).
- Commercial Driving License: For commercial vehicles like trucks, buses, etc.
- International Driving Permit (IDP): For driving in foreign countries.
Eligibility Criteria
- For Motorcycle without Gear (50cc): Minimum 16 years of age (with parental consent).
- For LMV & MCWG: Minimum 18 years of age.
- For Commercial Vehicles: Minimum 20 years of age.
- Must be conversant with traffic rules and regulations.
- Must have a valid Learner's License for at least 30 days (for Permanent DL).
Documents Required
- Proof of Age: Birth Certificate, School Leaving Certificate, Passport.
- Proof of Address: Aadhaar Card, Passport, Utility Bills (electricity, water).
- Proof of Identity: Aadhaar Card, Voter ID, Passport.
- Passport-sized photographs.
- Medical Certificate (Form 1A) for commercial licenses or applicants over 40.
How to Apply for a Learner's License (LL) Online
- Visit the official Parivahan Sewa portal (Ministry of Road Transport & Highways).
- Select "Your State" from the state dropdown.
- Click on "Apply Online" and then "New Learner's License".
- Fill out the application form with personal and vehicle details.
- Upload required documents and photograph/signature.
- Pay the application fee online.
- Schedule an appointment for the LL test (if required, some states allow online tests).
- Appear for the LL test and collect your Learner's License.
How to Apply for a Permanent Driving License (DL) Online
- Ensure you have held a valid Learner's License for at least 30 days but not more than 1 year.
- Visit the Parivahan Sewa portal and select "New Driving License".
- Fill the application form, providing your LL number.
- Upload necessary documents.
- Pay the required fee.
- Schedule an appointment for the Driving Skill Test at your RTO.
- Appear for the test with your vehicle.
- If you pass, your Permanent DL will be dispatched to your address.
How to Check Driving License Status Online
- Go to the Parivahan Sewa portal.
- Navigate to "Online Services" and then "Driving Licence Related Services".
- Select "Your State " as your state.
- Click on "Application Status" or "DL Search".
- Enter your Application Number, Date of Birth, or DL Number.
- View the current status of your driving license application or details.
Important Points to Remember
- Always carry your Driving License while driving.
- Renew your DL before its expiry to avoid penalties.
- Ensure all documents are clear and legible before uploading.
- Practice driving thoroughly before appearing for the skill test.
