Overview of Sikkim Tourism

The Sikkim Tourism Department is the official body responsible for promoting and developing tourism in the state. Sikkim is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, pristine landscapes, and unique cultural heritage. The department works to provide tourists with a safe and enriching experience while preserving the state's fragile ecosystem. It manages various initiatives, including the promotion of adventure tourism, ecotourism, and cultural festivals.

Key Services for Tourists

The Tourism Department, in collaboration with other state bodies, provides essential services to tourists:

  • Permit Issuance: Due to Sikkim's strategic location, some areas are restricted or protected. The department helps tourists, both domestic and foreign, in obtaining the necessary permits.
    • Inner Line Permit (ILP): Required for foreign nationals.
    • Protected Area Permit (PAP): Required for both domestic and foreign tourists to visit specific areas like North Sikkim (Lachen, Lachung, Gurudongmar Lake) and parts of East Sikkim.
  • Information and Guidance: The department's official website serves as a comprehensive guide for all tourist information, including details on destinations, accommodation, travel agents, and local regulations.
  • Safety and Security: The department works closely with the Sikkim Police to ensure the safety of tourists and to provide assistance in case of emergencies.

How to Apply for Permits Online

The process for obtaining permits has been partially digitized for convenience. For instance, Protected Area Permits (PAPs) for North Sikkim can be applied for online, simplifying the initial steps.

  1. Online Application: Visit the designated tourism portal and fill out the online application form for the required permit.
  2. Documents Required: You will need to upload digital copies of a valid photo ID (like an Aadhaar Card/Voter ID for domestic tourists or a Passport for foreigners), passport-sized photographs, and a valid Sikkim visa (for foreign nationals).
  3. Physical Verification: While the application can be initiated online, the final permit is usually issued at the respective Check Post or the Tourism Department's office in Gangtok upon physical verification and document submission.
  4. Travel Agent Assistance: It is highly recommended to apply for permits through a registered travel agent, as they are authorized to handle the entire process, including the physical submission of documents.
