Overview of Birth & Death Registration

The Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Tamil Nadu, manages the registration of births and deaths. The primary portal for these services is the Civil Registration System (CRS). This online platform allows citizens to search for, view, and download birth and death certificates for events registered from January 1, 2018, onwards. For events that occurred prior to this date, the certificate must be obtained directly from the respective local body (Municipality, Corporation, or Town Panchayat).

Key Services and Features

The CRS portal streamlines the process of obtaining these vital documents.

  • Birth Certificate Search & Download: Users can search for a birth certificate by providing details such as the date of birth, gender, and the local body of registration. The certificate can then be downloaded as a PDF.
  • Death Certificate Search & Download: Similar to the birth certificate, death certificates can be searched for and downloaded by entering the date of death and other relevant details.
  • Child Name Inclusion: The portal allows parents to add the name of their child to a birth certificate.
  • Free Downloads: Certificates for events registered from January 1, 2018, can be downloaded free of cost from the portal.

How to Apply or Obtain a Certificate

The process for getting a birth or death certificate is primarily online, though offline steps are required for events not yet digitized.

  1. Reporting an Event: All births and deaths in Tamil Nadu must be reported within 21 days of the event. In a hospital, the institution is responsible for reporting the event. For home births or deaths, the head of the household must inform the local registrar (e.g., Village Administrative Officer or Sanitary Inspector).
  2. Accessing the Online Portal: Go to the official CRS portal. On the homepage, select the "Birth" or "Death" certificate search option.
  3. Search and Verify: Enter the required details and a captcha code. If the details match the records, the system will display the certificate.
  4. Download and Print: You can download the digital certificate as a PDF file. The certificate's authenticity can often be verified using a QR code.
